This course focuses on the key linkages between strategy and finance. A central part of this course will be student participation in a newly developed business simulation. Students will be divided into competing teams that seek to maximize profit in the running of a business that has four distinct products, including a service offering. An important objective of this instructional exercise will be to enhance the students understanding of the roles of the C-level executives (e.g. the CEO and the CFO) in the making and implementing of corporate strategy. Also important will be the study of the strategic and financial dimensions of developing and executing business unit strategies. In between team decisions, Professor Young will lead the class in a series of interactive lectures and case studies that focus on the linkages between strategy and finance. The cases will be drawn from the case libraries of Harvard and other leading business schools.
