Accreditation in Higher Education
Accreditation plays a vital role in higher education and is seen as one of the major ways in which the higher education community sets expectations for quality and how government and the public define and communicate the overriding public interest in higher education. Accreditation has also, appropriately, evolved over the years in response to the changes in this higher education environment. But, accreditation, although a critical success factor of institutions of higher learning, is not something that is necessarily fully understood by all key institutional stakeholders – senior administrators, faculty, program directors, etc. The purpose of this course is to provide a thorough understanding of accreditation in higher education. It examines the purpose of accreditation, looks at the various domestic and international accreditation agencies, discuses the accreditation criteria and takes candidates through the accreditation process. In addition it draws comparisons of the top accrediting organisations and highlights institutional benefits of maintaining accreditations.
