Image I have been quite pleased with my experience with the ISM PhD program. My expectation coming out of the program was to have developed a strong research agenda and build upon my teaching experience so that I could move into a teaching position at a good university. I have accomplished both my teaching and research objectives!

The ISM PhD is unique in many ways and this has helped me in my search for a teaching position. Throughout my search, I was very happy with the responses I received to my application materials and the inquiries regarding my degree from ISM. The fact that I had a PhD with a strong international focus is what opened the door for me with many institutions. I appeared "different" than the other candidates.

Being an educator is all about helping individuals succeed in their personal and/or professional pursuits. I found that many of the ISM instructors take this to heart and truly are there to help the students. This approach not only helps the ISM students succeed in their personal objectives but also provides a teaching philosophy that the PhD students can subsequently emulate as they embark on a career in academia.

Image I enjoyed my academic experience at ISM and recommend it to those with a passion for international business and culture. You work with so many talented classmates and professors. The experience is rich with colleagues from Africa, Europe, Asia, and South America. I was often the only American living in the states in my classes. When I first entered academia, I was skeptical about my traditional colleagues since most of them did not have much applied experience. But, through my coursework at ISM, I discovered the how best practices link to important the theories. I gained respect for my colleagues who studied and researched the application of these theories. Many of these models have become the foundation for the most successful consulting practices. I knew how to market and sell before ISM, but I rarely knew how to best define, why the best practices follow the most innovative or insightful theories. I did not know who was responsible for a break-through and how the best thinking fit together to lay a foundation for my discipline. Because of my ISM experience, I am able to put the pieces together in a cohesive fashion. My instructors challenged me "dig deep" and build a skeleton of connecting ideas and to become more disciplined in my business analysis, and this has proved infinitely valuable. I credit Dr. Horn and my ISM professors for having a profound impact on my consulting practice and teaching.

Mark_Esposito_2012.jpg ISM has been foundational to my educational journey as part of their faculty as well as an alumnus of the doctoral program, since 2006 when I started.

It is probably the most exclusive boutique doctoral school I have ever come across, with small size classrooms that allow direct interaction with world class faculty, coming from all over the world.

Flexible in nature, rigorous and empowering, my relationship with ISM is one meant to last a lifetime, as a proud member of their Doctoral community.

Frank Cotae, Tenure & Research Track Professor Print E-mail

Frank Cotae

I have pursued a DBA from ISM with the unambiguous purpose of transitioning from a professional manager and consultant to a full-time university teaching position. I have been more than pleased with the instruction I have received during the seminars held at St. John’s University, in New York.

The knowledge and quality of instruction, alongside the research and assessment elements embedded into the program made a world of difference for my intellectual development.

I would like to add my outmost thanks to Dr. Horn, the faculty and the staff for their continuous patience, assistance and professionalism during the entire program. The teacher and researcher that I hope I have become today are due entirely to the instruction I have received at ISM.

While the program is intense and challenging the results have been better than I hoped for and as such I recommend the doctoral program without reservations to any individual pursuing further academic or professional goals.

Frank Desimone, PhD Program Candidate Print E-mail

Frank Desimone I have found the seminars in New York (on the campus of St. John's University) to be well organized with timely and relevant course material. The Professors have been excellent and my fellow classmates in the seminar were impressive and motivated. Participating in these courses has certainly broadened my educational perspective and solidified my decision to move to a career in academia.

Since initiating my studies at ISM in August of 2006, I find it has clearly upgraded my in-class teaching at Wagner! My syllabus is far more detailed, the assignments I provide the students are structured better and I have been able to integrate much of the material I learned from the coursework at ISM into class lectures and assignments. I recently used one of my research assignments as a case assignment in a Strategic Marketing MBA class. I also feel I am more prepared to challenge my students with interesting ideas and materials beyond the scope of the assigned textbook.

I am particularly drawn to ISM because of its expert faculty and international curriculum, with the opportunity to pursue academic study in Paris, New York, Tokyo and Shanghai and to make world-wide corporate contacts. The program gives me the possibility of complementing my extensive professional experience with stimulating and invigorating studies from which my students will benefit, at undergraduate and at post-graduate level.

Richard Belloff, DBA Program Graduate Print E-mail

Richard Belloff, DBA I enrolled in ISM's DBA program with the explicit intention of teaching full-time at the university level. I was both pleased and impressed with the academic rigor of the program. This experience included work with both New York and Paris based faculty.

Importantly, I found the faculty and staff universally supportive of my goal to join the academic community. Much credit must go to Dean Horn, who provided guidance along the way, and a helpful reference as I sought faculty positions. In addition, he was charged with reading my dissertation, not a small feat by any means.

I recommend the ISM DBA program without reservation. It is a challenging program and appropriately so. In the end, the outcome clearly justified the effort.

Rob Wood, PhD Program Candidate Print E-mail

Rob Wood, PhD Program Candidate I have found there is a definitive caché associated with my degree from a European-based University, with particular emphasis on my International Business instruction. My department chairs, as well as my students at UNC - Ashville, state my ISM degree carries with it a verisimilitude not found within an American doctorate program with the same specialty. As with International Business Management instruction in general, most American universities focus more on how American businesses do business internationally, not necessarily how business is done internationally, which is a much broader, and more valuable base.

Academic Activities:

Full Time Faculty: UNC - Ashville, NC USA

Teaching: Introduction to Management and Team Dynamics

Adjunct Faculty: Western Carolina Graduate School, NC USA

Image The ISM PhD program has been very important in my academic work as a teacher and researcher. I believe that no other program available has a group of students with such an incredible professional background. Attending the seminar has always provided important resources for my course designs and often is a base for new research and publications. Teaching international business disciplines requires a broad perspective and interdisciplinary studies, and ISM provides all of that. The partnership with the Asian institutions is an incredible opportunity to acquire direct knowledge of those markets and to collaborate in research with overseas colleagues and renowned scholars.

Image ISM has been quite instrumental in improving my teaching and my overall knowledge-base. Following a course on Risk Control at ISM, I revamped my Fundraising curriculum to include several of the topics we covered, and added new readings from leading professionals in the Risk Control field.

I have also recently become a thesis advisor for a student living in Vermont, and to help guide her in her research, I am using a framework I learned and mastered in my ISM course on Empirical Research and Advanced Statistics. Not only was I able to provide my advisee with a solid tool for gathering and evaluating research, I could help her apply her work in a way that is useful to her community.

Academic Activities:

Adjunct Faculty: Spertus College, Chicago Il., and Illinois Institute of Techonology

Teaching: Fundraising, Non-Profit Law, Strategic Planning and Complex Organizations

Professional Activities:

Turner White, PhD Program Candidate Print E-mail

Turner White As a PhD candidate at ISM, my studies so far have made a significant impact in my life in teaching. My courses at ISM have provided a major contribution to my students’ experiences at Rockhurst. The International Capital Markets course, for example, was very, very good in helping me and subsequently my students understand the dynamics of markets and why they move. In fact, several of them said at the end the Capstone Course that it brought together the practical and applied aspects of their experiences in their business studies; this effect was a direct result of my courses at ISM. It has positively changed the way I approach my courses at Rockhurst; a real benefit for the students and for me.

Academic Activities:

Assistant Professor: Rockhurst University, Helzberg School of Management, KS USA

Teaching: Business Policy, Corporate Strategy and Business Ethics

Professional Activities:

Zahra Ladha, MBA, PhD Program Candidate Print E-mail

Zahra Ladha I had already started my position as a Marketing instructor at the University of British Columbia in the Faculty of Business, before I started my PhD at ISM. However, my experience there has certainly led to improved teaching on my part. Having studied with ISM in China and Japan, has also enabled me to contribute many of my personal, international experiences when teaching similar courses, which I find my students truly value. Our discussions have more depth and debates are more lively as a result of my ability to relate real-life examples.

Having the opportunity to teach at ISEG, which was due to my participation in the ISM PhD program, has increased my stamina and ability to teach longer hours than what I am used to at University of British Columbia and has made teaching day after day easier. Although I had solid teaching experience prior to ISM, the combination of the PhD program's benefits, and the benefits of teaching at ISEG, have cumulatively improved my teaching capabilities.

Academic Activities:

Faculty Member: University of British Columbia, Canada

Teaching: Communication, Introduction to Marketing
