Redefining Executive Education
tudents will learn how to make HRM a strategic resource to help the organization meet its short and long range objectives. They will learn why profit center heads in the past distrusted the old Personnel Function and described it as an impediment to getting needful things done. Students will learn how organizations have been transforming those old, bureaucratic Personnel Functions into strategic Human Resources Departments that help profit centers achieve their goals. Students will also learn how to use basic principles of strategic human resource management to manage and motivate employees in the workplace. The course takes a strategic approach to human resource management (HRM). We establish the links between the strategic human resource management (SHRM) needs of organizations and the highly competitive and volatile business environment. The course investigates some of the most important current trends in SHRM, including flexible performance-based compensation, management and executive recruitment and assessment, organizational design and development, succession planning, management and employee development, and managing the evolution of a corporate culture that supports the organization’s mission statement, core values and strategic goals. Through course materials, case studies, student presentations and other course components we will illustrate how SHRM can facilitate corporate strategy and how SHRM can be a central resource to help the organization meet its financial and other long term objectives.
